Why Me?

Phyllis Brasch Librach, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, May 4, 1998
“Page-by-page, the cardiologists have navigated readers through the basics of heart disease. They cover anatomy, symptoms, procedures, risks, benefits, treatments and options.”

Jane Harriman, Delaware News Journal, March 24, 1998
“Clear, concise and comprehensive... It has marvelous color illustrations of the heart and procedures... I have lots of books on heart disease, but this one is wonderful and different.”

Publishers Weekly, May 3, 1999
“The question posed by the title of this exemplary medical guidebook can perhaps be answered only by God, but the authors respond to it with enough knowledge, wisdom and compassion to set any patient at ease. Clearly understanding the stress and fear that accompany a diagnosis of heart disease, cardiologists Nordlicht, Weiss and Ludbrook lead sufferers step-by-step through the basics of the heart and heart disease; potential treatments, including cardiac catheterization, drug therapy, balloon angioplasty, stents, atherectomy and bypass surgery; and how to deal psychologically with the disease and its aftermath. Their approach is upbeat and reassuring but realistic, emphasizing the partnership between physician and patient that can aid in the restoration of health (“The entire foundation of medicine rests on a single relationship: what goes on between you and your doctor”). There's a special chapter directed at women, who often consider coronary artery disease a male-only problem. A thorough glossary and a wealth of color illustrations not only explain important points but also give patients a place to copy their medical records and track their progress. A model of patient advocacy in book form and a must for anyone encountering heart disease, whether as a patient, family member, friend or physician this clear, eminently useful volume is the first in a series that will go on to explore diabetes, hypertension and heart failure.”
